A Dash of Reality Lee Murray 9780473199333 Books Reviews

Have you ever picked up a book and have not wanted to put it down until the very last page ? Not just because it is an awesome read but because you can picture yourself in the book , travel with the character ? I'm not normally the type of person who feels they travel through to the places the characters been but as A Dash of Reality was sent not only in New Zealand but the main gist of the story in Tauranga , where I live. The book itself was almost an interactive novel as I imagined myself in the different parts of Tauranga- running along The Strand , looking out over the Tauranga Harbour and Papamoa Hills , going with Caro to Riding with the Disabled. I found the experience of reading A Dash of Reality amazing )
A Dash of Reality takes us into the life of Melanie Short , she has been the poster girl for Sportzgirl - the last seven years . Now with the recession hitting and sales down , it seems that her job is in tatters and Melanie finds herself fired. Worried about how she is going to survive, Melanie whilst flipping channels and being a couch potato comes across a TV show and a magazine article about Obesity and Fitness. With an idea to save not only her job but to boost Sportzgirl's ratings, Melanie implements a fitness reality show with the main sport - Running. Along with half-a-dozen other New Zealand contestants, Melanie finds herself as one of the contestants on the show but unfortunately for Melanie her and exercise does not mix. Armed with Olaf the trainer , Melanie must now spend the next few months training in order to win the show and hopefully boost her career. What will happen though, when it seems that Melanie in order to go places has to pretend to date co-star Rico , will her relationship with Jack hit the rocks ? A Dash of Reality is a novel that describes the lengths that one girl would go to , to save her career and boost her own ratings, even if it means that one must sacrifice the one thing they love the most. Will Melanie sacrifice Love for her Career or will she discover that sometimes having both in moderate helpings is the way to go ?
Laughed my head off. Good one.
Good, fast-paced read. this I found hard to put down as I wanted to know what happened to Sportzgirl Melanie next. A tabloid reporter has it in for her in true New Zealand 'cut down the tall poppy' syndrome. I wanted Melanie to capture him and gag him with her sweaty running gear. Other characterization is excellent in that 'reality TV show' manner. This book definitely kept me entertained on that all night flight from Auckland to San Francisco. For all lovers of chick-lit, I definitely recommend.
We all experience embarrassing moments and face personal challenges in our lives. This racy, face-paced novel gives us a humorous and light-hearted picture how the heroine Melanie Short deals with these obstacles. I was drawn along with Melanie in her race and seriously wanted to kick her rivals and the media for their actions. Melanie's escapades at times made me laughed out loud and I discovered the friendly rivalry and close camaraderie amongst runners. Perhaps I could run a marathon.
I really enjoyed this clever and light hearted chick-lit offering from promising new writer Lee Murray. It has great local flavour and lots of lovely recognisable details about Tauranga and surrounds. The pace is perfect - it romps along and before you know it, you've finished, but you kind of wish there was more - always a sign of a satisfying read. The progress and development of the main character (both as a runner and a person) keeps you interested - slowly but surely she grows and changes. The language and quality of the writing is superior to much that is found in the genre - Lee presents some wicked, funny and original similes that often made me flick back for a second look. At times I laughed out loud. A really fresh sense of an unashamedly New Zealand voice. A real treat. Ten out of ten.
A story of personal growth that will appeal to a wide range of readers. When frivolous, self centred Melanie Short is fired from her job as billboard model for Sportzgirl's sexy sportswear, she thinks it's the end of her glitzy way of life. After a splurge of emotion fuelled retail therapy, reality strikes hard. She might lose her cherished apartment! A flash of inspiration enables her to fight back in what turns into a hilarious, uphill struggle against her sleazy bosses, who will stop at nothing to humiliate her. Mel discovers strengths she never knew she had. There are things more important than fame and fortune, not least a doting boyfriend, waiting in the wings to get his mitts back on her nubile body. Narrated in the first person at an almost breathless pace, A Dash of Reality combines a clever plot and some well drawn characters, both likeable and obnoxious. It is set in the author's home town of Tauranga, making inventive use of its landmarks and lesser known byways.
This is a cheerful, easy to read chick lit. bundle of laughs. Full of New Zealand landscapes and downunder humour, Dash of Reality kept me turning the pages. Melanie's attempts to get fit and run for her life(style)in a reality TV show are so entertaining, but I feel like I learned a lot about running long distance too. My favourite quote comes from the moment she first managed to run up scenic Mount Maunganui

"I ran up a mountain. Up an entire mountain! Before breakfast too. I couldn't be more elated if I'd spent the night with Hugh Jackman. I'm wearing a grin like gorse; widespread and hard to eradicate. I, Melanie Short, am nothing less than awesome."

Read it!
